Invasive specialists scrub in alongside cardiologists during coronary angiograms, percutaneous coronary interventions (angioplasty and stenting), and pacemaker or defibrillator implantations, monitoring real-time hemodynamic pressures and arrhythmias. Non-invasive technologists perform transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms (TTE/TEE), stress tests, and Holter monitoring.

2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

In daily clinical practice, a Cardiovascular Technologist performs the following core responsibilities:

• Perform 2D, 3D, and Doppler transthoracic echocardiograms to assess cardiac chamber size, wall motion, ejection fraction, and valve function.
• Assist interventional cardiologists during sterile cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty, stent placement, and electrophysiology (EP) ablation procedures.
• Monitor and record intracardiac pressures, 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs), and patient vital signs throughout invasive and stress-testing procedures.
• Conduct non-invasive vascular duplex ultrasound scans of the carotid arteries, abdominal aorta, and lower-extremity deep venous systems to detect stenosis or DVT.
• Recognize life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (such as ventricular tachycardia or heart block) and alert the attending physician immediately.
• Calibrate ultrasound transducers, hemodynamic recording consoles, and crash-cart defibrillation equipment.

3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools

Most cardiovascular technologists complete a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or a specialized post-associate certificate accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology (JRC-CVT).

The first year covers human anatomy, cardiovascular physiology, medical physics, pharmacology, and EKG interpretation, while the second year focuses on intensive hands-on clinical rotations in hospital echocardiography suites, vascular labs, or cardiac cath labs.

4. National Certification Exams & State Licensure

While only a few states mandate a separate state license for non-radiologic cardiovascular technologists, virtually all hospitals and Medicare-reimbursed cardiology practices require national certification within 6 to 12 months of hire.

Primary credentials are awarded by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)—including the Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS), Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), and Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS)—and by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), which confers the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) credentials.
