Earning an initial ARRT Radiography—RT(R)—credential unlocks one of the richest post-primary specialization ladders in healthcare: technologists can cross-train into Computed Tomography—RT(CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging—RT(MR), Mammography—RT(M), Cardiac/Vascular Interventional Radiography—RT(CI)/(VI), or Bone Densitometry.

2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

In daily clinical practice, a Radiologic & MRI Technologist performs the following core responsibilities:

• Position patients accurately and set exposure technical factors (kVp, mAs, SID) to capture diagnostic digital radiographs of the skeletal system, chest, and abdomen.
• Operate mobile bedside X-ray units in hospital ICUs/ERs and C-arm fluoroscopy systems in the operating room during surgical procedures.
• Apply ALARA radiation protection principles, using collimation, lead shielding, and optimal exposure parameters for patients and staff.
• Administer oral, rectal, and intravenous (IV) iodinated or gadolinium contrast media and monitor patients for allergic reactions (CT/MRI/Fluoroscopy scope).
• For MRI Technologists: Screen patients rigorously for ferromagnetic implants/pacemakers, position RF coils, and run pulse sequences on 1.5T and 3.0T MRI scanners.
• Evaluate images on PACS workstations for positioning accuracy and diagnostic quality before transmitting studies to the radiologist.

3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools

Becoming a radiologic technologist requires graduating from a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or four-year Bachelor’s degree program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

The curriculum integrates radiographic physics, radiation biology and protection, human anatomy and positioning, image evaluation, pathology, and patient care with 1,200 to 1,500+ hours of supervised clinical rotations across hospital ER, OR, fluoroscopy, and outpatient imaging departments.

4. National Certification Exams & State Licensure

More than 42 states require radiologic technologists to hold a State Radiologic Technologist License. State licensure and employer hiring universally require passing the national registry exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to earn the Registered Technologist in Radiography—RT(R)—credential.

Once certified as an RT(R), technologists can complete structured clinical competency requirements and structured education to sit for post-primary ARRT specialty exams in CT, MRI, Mammography, or Vascular Interventional Radiology, boosting annual compensation by $10,000 to $25,000+.
