Medical assistants (MAs) are among the most versatile and heavily recruited professionals in outpatient healthcare. Unlike hospital nursing assistants who focus exclusively on inpatient bedside care, medical assistants are cross-trained to handle both clinical back-office procedures and front-office medical administration in physician practices and ambulatory clinics.

On the clinical side, medical assistants escort patients to exam rooms, reconcile medication lists in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), measure vital signs, perform venipuncture (phlebotomy), run CLIA-waived point-of-care lab tests (strep, flu, COVID-19, urinalysis, hemoglobin A1c), record 12-lead EKGs, remove sutures, and administer subcutaneous or intramuscular vaccinations and medications under physician delegation.

On the administrative side, they manage appointment scheduling, verify insurance eligibility, obtain prior authorizations for diagnostic imaging and specialty referrals, and enter ICD-10/CPT encounter codes.

2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

In daily clinical practice, a Medical Assistant performs the following core responsibilities:

• Room patients, conduct initial clinical intake interviews, reconcile medications, and record vital signs and pain scores in the EHR (Epic, Cerner, eClinicalWorks).
• Perform venipuncture (phlebotomy) and capillary blood collection, process specimens, and run CLIA-waived point-of-care diagnostic tests.
• Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs), pulmonary function spirometry, visual acuity screenings, and ear lavages.
• Prepare sterile instrument trays and assist physicians and nurse practitioners with minor office surgeries, biopsies, wound care, and suture/staple removal.
• Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections (including pediatric and adult immunizations) as delegated by the supervising clinician and state law.
• Coordinate prescription refills, prior authorizations, diagnostic referrals, and patient scheduling.

3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools

Most employers prefer graduates of a 9- to 12-month postsecondary certificate/diploma program or a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

Accredited curricula combine classroom and laboratory instruction in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, injection techniques, phlebotomy, EKG, and medical insurance coding with a mandatory 160- to 200-hour unpaid clinical externship in an outpatient medical office.

4. National Certification Exams & State Licensure

While most states allow physicians to delegate clinical tasks to medical assistants under medical board regulations, some states (such as Washington’s MA-C credential and New Jersey’s injection delegation rules) legally require national certification or formal registration to administer injections or perform venipuncture.

Health systems nationwide overwhelmingly require one of the four nationally accredited credentials: Certified Medical Assistant—CMA (AAMA)—from the American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant—RMA (AMT)—from American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant—CCMA (NHA)—from the National Healthcareer Association, or NCMA (NCCT).
