1. Role Overview & Clinical Scope of Practice
While X-rays and CT scans depict anatomical structure, nuclear medicine reveals how organs and tissues are actually functioning at the cellular and metabolic level. Nuclear Medicine Technologists prepare and administer specialized radiopharmaceuticals—via intravenous injection, inhalation, or oral ingestion—that selectively concentrate in target organs such as the heart, thyroid, bones, kidneys, or malignant tumors.
Using scintillation gamma cameras, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), and hybrid Positron Emission Tomography / Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanners, technologists detect the gamma rays emitted from inside the patient’s body and reconstruct detailed functional images. They also administer targeted therapeutic radionuclides (such as Iodine-131 for thyroid cancer or Lutetium-177 PSMA for metastatic prostate cancer).
Because hybrid PET/CT and theranostics (combined diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine) are expanding rapidly in oncology and neurology (including amyloid PET scans for Alzheimer’s disease), certified nuclear medicine technologists earn some of the highest salaries in medical imaging.
2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities
In daily clinical practice, a Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs the following core responsibilities:
- Calculate, prepare, assay, and administer patient-specific doses of radiopharmaceuticals under strict Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) radiation safety protocols.
- Operate gamma cameras, SPECT systems, and hybrid PET/CT or PET/MRI scanners to acquire static, dynamic, and tomographic functional images.
- Perform nuclear cardiology myocardial perfusion stress tests (pharmacological and treadmill) while monitoring patient vital signs and EKGs.
- Assist nuclear medicine physicians and oncologists in administering therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals for thyroid disease and neuroendocrine/prostate cancers.
- Perform daily radiopharmacy hot-lab quality control, dose calibrator constancy checks, Geiger-Müller area surveys, and radioactive waste decay logging.
- Maintain strict ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) radiation protection standards for patients, staff, and the public.
3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools
Recognized Program Accreditor: JRCNMT (Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology)
Candidates must graduate from an Associate or Bachelor’s degree program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). Licensed radiologic technologists (ARRT) or science bachelor’s graduates can also complete a 12-month JRCNMT-accredited post-baccalaureate certificate.
Coursework covers nuclear physics, radiation biology and protection, radiopharmacy chemistry, cross-sectional anatomy, instrumentation, and over 1,000 hours of supervised hospital clinical rotations in general nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, and PET/CT.

To operate hybrid PET/CT scanners in many states, technologists also earn post-primary credentials in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) via NMTCB or Computed Tomography—RT(CT)—via ARRT.
