1. Role Overview & Clinical Scope of Practice
Pharmacy technicians are indispensable technical specialists across retail, hospital, and specialty healthcare settings. As pharmacists increasingly focus on direct clinical patient management, medication therapy management (MTM), and immunizations, Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhTs) manage the technical preparation and distribution of medications.
In community pharmacies, technicians enter electronic prescriptions, calculate day-supply and pediatric liquid dosages, count and label medications, reconstitute oral antibiotics, and resolve third-party insurance rejections and prior authorizations. In hospital inpatient pharmacies, technicians perform sterile intravenous (IV) compounding under USP <797> laminar-airflow hoods, prepare hazardous chemotherapy infusions under USP <800> containment, and restock unit-based Pyxis or Omnicell automated dispensing cabinets.
Many states now authorize specially trained, PTCB-certified pharmacy technicians to administer adult and pediatric vaccinations, perform point-of-care strep/flu testing, and perform "tech-check-tech" final product verification in hospital settings.
2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities
In daily clinical practice, a Pharmacy Technician performs the following core responsibilities:
- Receive electronic prescriptions, translate medical sig abbreviations, and calculate accurate dosages, dilutions, and days-supply in the pharmacy system.
- Measure, count, pour, reconstitute, and package oral, topical, and injectable medications with barcode verification prior to pharmacist final check.
- Compound sterile intravenous (IV) admixtures, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and chemotherapy infusions inside ISO Class 5 cleanroom hoods (Hospital scope).
- Adjudicate third-party commercial, Medicare Part D, and Medicaid prescription claims, resolving DAW codes, step-therapy edits, and prior authorizations.
- Manage controlled substance (Schedule II–V) perpetual inventories, DEA Form 222/CSOS ordering, and automated dispensing cabinet (Pyxis/Omnicell) restocking.
- Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous immunizations (where authorized by state board rules and CPR/immunization training).
3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools
Recognized Program Accreditor: ASHP / ACPE (Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Commission)
Candidates can qualify by completing a 6- to 12-month vocational certificate or diploma program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), or by completing a PTCB-recognized employer training program comprising at least 500 supervised pharmacy work hours.
Academic coursework covers pharmaceutical calculations (alligations, drip rates, milliequivalents), top 200 brand/generic pharmacology, federal pharmacy law (Durham-Humphrey, Kefauver-Harris, Controlled Substances Act), non-sterile USP <795> and sterile USP <797> compounding, and third-party billing.

Interstate Compact & Portability: PTCB CPhT certification is the national benchmark recognized by all 50 State Boards of Pharmacy.
Over 45 states require pharmacy technicians to register with or obtain a license from the State Board of Pharmacy. National certification is earned by passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)—conferring the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential—or the ExCPT exam via the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Hospital and infusion technicians can earn advanced PTCB credentials such as Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) and Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv).
