2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

In daily clinical practice, a Massage Therapist performs the following core responsibilities:

• Conduct client health intakes, review medical contraindications (such as acute DVT, fractures, or active infections), and assess range of motion.
• Perform clinical manual therapy techniques including Swedish, deep-tissue, myofascial release, trigger-point therapy, and neuromuscular re-education.
• Administer specialized treatments such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for oncology/post-surgical patients or sports recovery massage for athletes.
• Apply therapeutic adjuncts such as hydrotherapy, hot/cold contrast packs, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), and kinesiology taping.
• Educate patients on self-myofascial foam rolling, ergonomic posture, stretching routines, and hydration.
• Document treatment notes (SOAP format) for insurance billing in chiropractic or physical therapy settings and sanitize treatment tables and linens.

3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools

Becoming a massage therapist requires completing a state-approved postsecondary massage therapy certificate or diploma program, typically ranging from 500 to 1,000 clock hours (6 to 12 months; New York requires 1,000 hours, while most states require 500 to 750 hours). Programs accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) or approved by state boards qualify graduates for licensure.

The curriculum includes musculoskeletal anatomy, kinesiology (muscle origins, insertions, and actions), physiology, pathology and contraindications, clinical ethics, business law, and 100 to 200+ hours of supervised student clinic hands-on practice.

Currently, 45 states and the District of Columbia regulate massage therapists via mandatory state licensure (Licensed Massage Therapist — LMT, or Certified Massage Therapist — CMT). Nearly all licensing states require passing the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB).

Therapists can also earn the highest voluntary national credential—Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (BCTMB)—through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB), as well as specialty certifications in Oncology Massage or Vodder Lymphedema Therapy.
