- Review patient clinical history and prior imaging studies to select the optimal ultrasound transducer frequency and examination protocol.
- Perform real-time 2D, 3D/4D, and color/spectral Doppler ultrasound scans of the abdomen, pelvis, fetus, breast, thyroid, and superficial structures.
- Differentiate normal cross-sectional anatomical structures from pathological findings (such as cysts, tumors, calcifications, or fluid collections) during the live scan.
- Record precise biometric measurements (such as fetal crown-rump length, biparietal diameter, or organ volume) and transmit PACS images with a preliminary technical worksheet to the interpreting radiologist or OB/GYN.
- Assist physicians during ultrasound-guided invasive procedures, including amniocentesis, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and fine-needle aspiration biopsies.
- Maintain ultrasound consoles, disinfect endocavitary and surface transducers, and apply ergonomic scanning techniques.

Individuals who already hold an allied health degree (such as Radiologic Technology or Nursing) can complete a 12-month CAAHEP-accredited certificate program.
