Opticians guide patients in selecting lens materials (such as high-index polymers, polycarbonate, or Trivex), lens designs (digital free-form progressives, occupational lenses, or prism corrections), and optical coatings (anti-reflective, blue-light filtering, and photochromic treatments). They also fit and dispense rigid gas-permeable (RGP) and soft toric/multifocal contact lenses.

In the optical finishing lab, dispensing opticians use lensometers to verify prescription accuracy within ANSI Z80.1 tolerances, operate automated edgers, and heat-adjust acetate or titanium frames for custom ergonomic alignment.

2. Core Clinical & Technical Responsibilities

In daily clinical practice, a Dispensing Optician performs the following core responsibilities:

• Analyze and interpret optical prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists, calculating lens power transpositions and vertex compensations.
• Measure patient interpupillary distance (PD), multifocal segment heights, frame wrap, and corneal curvature (keratometry for contact lenses).
• Recommend optimal lens materials, progressive lens corridors, anti-reflective coatings, and frame styles suited to the patient’s prescription strength and lifestyle.
• Inspect finished spectacles using manual or automated lensometers to verify sphere, cylinder, axis, and prism accuracy against ANSI standards.
• Adjust, align, and repair eyeglass frames using optical pliers and frame warmers to ensure balanced weight distribution on the nasal bridge and ears.
• Instruct patients on proper contact lens insertion, removal, enzymatic disinfection, and corneal health precautions.

3. Education Requirements & Accredited Schools

Prospective opticians enter the profession either by completing a one- to two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing accredited by the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation (COA) or by completing a formal 2,000- to 6,000-hour state-registered apprenticeship under a licensed optician or optometrist.

Academic coursework covers geometric and physical optics, ocular anatomy and physiology, ophthalmic lens design, contact lens theory, optical laboratory edging, and dispensary business management.

4. National Certification Exams & State Licensure

Roughly 21 states require dispensing opticians to hold an active state license as a Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO) or Registered Optician. State licensure almost universally requires passing two national exams: the National Opticianry Competency Examination administered by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and the Contact Lens Registry Examination administered by the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE).

Even in non-licensing states, optical employers, ophthalmology groups, and major retail chains offer significant hourly pay premiums for ABO- and NCLE-certified opticians.
